Chapter 18: The Midwinter Court
They carried the Southern King into the Midwinter Court on a door, as he had promised.
Four guards held it at the corners, and the old man lay on it in his robes of state with his white head high.
The great hall was full to the walls.
Southern lords sat in rows beneath the red lanterns, with envoys behind them in furs from three provinces.
Jae-won stood at the foot of the dais in dark green, with the silver ring on his hand.
Ren Ito stood beside him in a clean robe, with a cut on his lip and a calm face.
They had walked in through the front gate at dawn, and no guard had dared stop the King's firstborn.
Min-jun saw them both from the door and stopped walking.
"He's brought him," Seo-jun murmured at his shoulder. "In front of everyone."
"Let him."
The King was set down before the throne.
Nobody spoke.
"My son Jae-won," the old man said, and the whole hall heard him. "You have something to say."
"I do, Father." Jae-won bowed to the dais and turned to the lords. "I bring a warning. The northern prince has deceived this court. He is no alpha, and he carries a child by some other man, which he means to pass off as my brother's heir."
A murmur rolled through the hall.
"He has also forged letters in my name. This man, who was once his lover, will swear it."
Ren stepped forward and bowed to the room.
"Min-jun begged me to help him," he said clearly. "Ask him about the child."
Every head in the hall turned.
Min-jun walked up the long aisle to the dais with his hands loose at his sides.
"Does the King's physician stand here?"
The Queen's physician came out of the front row, a thin man with spectacles.
