Chapter 6: The Kitchen

I came down the stairs one step at a time, and the third one creaked.

Joost turned from the kitchen window with the phone still against his ear.

He said, "I have to go," and ended the call.

We looked at each other across my kitchen floor.

He had pulled his jeans back on and nothing else.

"How long were you up there?" he said.

"Long enough." I stopped at the bottom step. "Told me what?"

He set the phone face down on the counter.

"It's nothing you need tonight."

"Joost. Told me what?"

"I can't."

"Can't, or won't?"

He rubbed his face with both hands.

"Both," he said. "If I tell you, you stay. And if you stay, you get hurt."

"By who?"

He said nothing.

I walked into the kitchen until I stood close enough to see his eyes.

"You stood next to your father while he put her plate on my chair," I said. "If there's something worse than that, say it."

His mouth worked.

"I'm trying to keep this from splitting the club," he said, low. "There's a vote in March. If it goes wrong, forty men and their families end up on opposite sides of a parking lot."

"That's what you're trying to keep?"

"It's not just that."

"Then what is it?"

"It's my father," Joost said, and stopped himself.

The kitchen clock ticked.

"Your father signed the order slip," I said.

His head came up.

"What slip?"

I went to the drawer by the stove and took out the yellow paper I had folded small.
