Chapter 26: The Lobby
On Tuesday I worked my first full shift in six months.
I came in at seven in the morning in navy scrubs with my hair twisted up and a pen through it.
My charge nurse had taped a paper sign over my old locker.
WELCOME BACK. DON'T GET SUSPENDED.
By noon I'd done a stab wound, a motorcycle and a roofer who'd come off a triple-decker in Mattapan.
All three lived.
All four bays were lit.
Conall was home in Southie with his arm in the sling and Grandda keeping him company.
Grandda texted me a photo of Conall losing at gin rummy one-handed, Niamh asleep on his good shoulder.
"He owes me twenty-six dollars," it said. "Tell him to heal faster, he's no fun like this."
At two-forty a car pulled up outside the ER's walk-in doors.
Not an ambulance.
A black car with tinted windows, with three news vans pulling in behind it.
Gwyneth got out of the back in big sunglasses and a cream coat, with one hand pressed flat to her chest.
The reporters were out of their vans before she reached the door.
"Ms. Harding! Did you pay a police officer to shoot Conall Byrne?"
