He Paid a Million for One Night, and the Contract Was Signed by My Mother novel · Chapter 8 of 24
Chapter 8: January 28
Margo's POV
I found the date on a Friday, in the hospital's own letter.
The billing office had mailed it to my mother's house.
My mother had put it in the drawer under the dish towels, where she kept things she didn't want to discuss.
I wasn't looking for it.
I was looking for a stamp.
The letter was one page.
It said the account of Odalys Landry had been paid in full, two hundred and twelve thousand dollars.
The wire came from a Verlander Marine operating account and was received January 28.
I read the date.
I read it again.
The ball had been February 17.
The wire had come in three weeks before Soren handed me the contract.
I stood in my mother's kitchen with the letter in my hand and the drawer open.
He had told me at his stove, in his undershirt, that he'd paid it because I shouldn't have to sell a night to settle it.
He had made it sound like something he'd done that week.
He had never said it was already done when I signed.
My mother was in the sewing room with the machine going, the long steady rattle of a hem.
I did not go in.
I put the letter in my pocket and drove to the batture road with my hands tight on the wheel.
