Chapter 9: The Levee Road
I did not ask my mother about the photograph.
I told myself I would, on Sunday.
I told myself a lot of things that week, and on Saturday night I stopped telling them and drove to the batture road.
Soren was waiting at the foot of the levee with his truck door open and the dome light on.
"I wasn't sure you'd come," he said.
"I wasn't sure either," I said.
"Where do you want to go?"
"Anywhere that isn't a house," I said.
He drove us along the top of the levee, under the long gray span of the Sunshine Bridge.
He stopped at a turnout where the willows grew thick.
The bridge lights lay across the river in gold bars.
He turned the engine off.
The windows were down and the night was warm, the first warm one of the year.
The wind smelled of cut cane and river mud.
"Margo," he said.
"Don't ask me anything," I said.
