Chapter 10: The Lien

The summons came on Monday, on Verlander Marine letterhead, in a typed envelope with my name on it.

It asked Miss Marguerite Landry to attend a meeting at the company's Baton Rouge offices at two o'clock, regarding the lien on the shrimp boat MARGUERITE.

I could have tossed it in the trash.

I thought about my father's boat sitting in a slip on the bayou with its paint going.

I went.

The Verlander Marine building stood on the riverfront, a tall glass block with a view of the bridge.

I rode an elevator to the ninth floor.

A secretary in a gray suit took me down a long hall to a boardroom with a table the length of a towboat.

Three men in captain's caps sat on one side of it.

Cormac Verlander sat at the head with a folder in front of him.

Soren sat at the foot.

He stood when I came in.

I didn't look at him.

"Miss Landry," Cormac said. "Sit."

I sat in the middle of the long table with the captains on one side and Soren at the far end.

I set my bag on my knee.

I had not brought my machine.

I wish I had.

"We'll make this short," Cormac said. "Your father's boat has a lien of a hundred and ninety thousand dollars. The company's bank has called it. That's the business."

"I know what the lien is," I said.

"Then you'll know the boat goes to auction in April," Cormac said.

"I've paid the interest," I said.
