Chapter 5: Unmatched
I looked up from the text.
Judson was already crossing the lounge.
He had his phone in his hand, screen out.
People moved out of his way without knowing why.
"What did you do?" he said.
He said it loud.
"Congratulations on matching, Maura. Now tell everybody what you did to my list."
The hugging stopped.
Forty people turned around.
"I didn't do anything to your list."
"I had fourteen programs." He held the phone up to the room. "Fourteen. I was a lock for at least ten of them. Today I go into the system and I have three. Three! Programs I barely interviewed at."
"You cut it."
"I never touched it!"
His voice cracked on the last word.
For one second he looked like a kid who'd lost his parents at the mall.
Then it was gone.
"You had my login," he said. "Everybody here knows you had my login. You proofread my application. You built my list."
"I did."
"And the account history says your phone was in my account at eleven-forty on rank night."
A murmur went around the room.
I felt my face go hot.
"I looked," I said. "I was watching. I didn't touch anything."
"Watching what?"
"You."
"I was at a bar with my friends!"
"Yes," I said. "You were."
One of the two friends from the party room was standing by the corkboard.
He looked at the floor.
"She found out about Denver," Judson said to the room. "She got jealous. She broke up with me, and then at eleven-forty she went into my account and deleted eleven programs. Out of spite. So I'd go unmatched."
"Judson."
"And she locked her own list ten minutes later so she'd be safe."
That part was true.
That was the problem with it.
It was built out of true pieces.
"Ask anyone who was in that room at eleven-forty," I said. "Ask them what you were doing."
