Chapter 16: Three Alphas
The Alphas came up the lake road in the afternoon, three of them with their Betas and a few guards each, and the Regent put them in the long gallery to wait for me.
Torin stood by the door with his arm in the sling.
He had told me what to say, and I had told him I would say it my own way.
"The Cedar Hollow Beta is on the road," I said. "He'll be here by morning."
"Then I'll be at the gate before he is." Torin's good hand flexed. "He doesn't get to smile at you alone."
The first was a broad woman near sixty, in a leather coat, with a stern square face.
She was the Alpha of the lake pack, and she did not get up.
"I came to see if you're real," she said. "I'll tell you now, the Regent has sent word to every pack about your forged locket."
"Then you came for the wrong thing," I said. "I'll show you something better."
I put the silver cup from the King's nightstand on the table between us.
She picked it up and sniffed it.
Her face changed slowly.
"Wolf's-tongue," she said.
"In my father's evening draught, for two years."
"My mate died of that." She set the cup down very carefully. "Three winters ago. A slow thing. A sickness in the legs, and then the heart. We never found who."
"I'd like to find who," I said. "I think we have, and I need an Alpha who'll watch me do it."
She was silent for a long time.
"I'll watch," she said. "And if you win, I'll kneel without being told."
The second was a young man with a scar down his jaw, who had been pacing the room since he arrived.
He was the Alpha of the northern ridge, and he was proud of it.
"I don't kneel to a girl from a rogue's cabin," he said. "Let the Marshal break you first."
"Fair."
"Is that all?"
"No." I let the thing in my chest lift its head, only a little, a breath of it.
