Chapter 22: The Ring
Nobody in the Hall moved.
The wolves from Cedar Hollow stood in the doorway in their work coats, with mud on their boots.
They had driven all night and walked the last mile, because Jasper had told them where to come.
"I owe the Stone a word," Jasper said. "Before I owe anyone else."
He walked down the long floor alone.
He didn't look at the sand, or at the Regent's chair, or at Torin propped against the dais.
He stopped in front of the black rock and put his palm on it, without being told.
I went and stood across from him.
"Go on," I said.
"I was at Cora's lodge the night you lost the baby," he said. His voice was low and even. "My phone was in her kitchen. You called me four times, and I never heard it ring."
The pack behind him stirred.
"I didn't reject you because I hated you. I rejected you because my mother asked, and I had never in my life said no to her."
"And you felt nothing."
"I felt nothing," he said. "Because there was nothing there to feel. You were never mine to lose. I'd have done it anyway."
I looked at him for a long time.
"Is that all of it?"
"Yes."
He took his hand off the Stone.
"You've heard my sentence," I said. "Give the Hall your seat."
He took the ring off his finger, the heavy gold Alpha's ring his father had worn, and set it on the black rock.
It rang once against the stone.
"Cedar Hollow chooses its own Alpha," I said, and I said it to the doorway. "Not the Regent. Not me."
A murmur went through the wolves.
Jasper turned to go.
