Chapter 27: What I Can't Promise

Torin's POV

I crossed the bridge on foot at four in the morning with my hands in my pockets.

The Black Fir guard at the pack house let me through without a word.

He had been at the lodge.

He had seen Cedric drink.

The cold room door was iron, with a hatch at eye height.

I did not open the hatch.

I unlocked the door and went in.

Rhoda looked up from her crate.

She had been awake all night, and she knew me at once.

"The Ironwood Alpha," she said. "The dead boy's brother."

"I'm Torin Hawksworth."

"I know who you are. You have his jaw."

I stood with my back against the door.

I had imagined this room for six years, and in my head it had always been bigger.

In my head I always had a gun.

"I'm not going to touch you," I said.

"Aren't you?" She smiled. "You look like a man who'd like to."

"I would."

"Then do it."

"No."

She watched me for a moment.

"Silver, they say," she said. "In his chest. You pulled the bullet out with your fingers. I heard it from the guard who shot him. He told me you didn't even cry out."

My left hand was a fist in my pocket.

I could feel the old scar pulling across the back of it.

"I came to ask one thing," I said.

"Ask."

"The man who held the last white wolf. Did he ever let go of anything after?"

"Never," said Rhoda. "Not a coin. Not a grudge. He died holding a pen."

"And you think I'm him."

"I think you've never let go of anything in your life, Torin Hawksworth." She leaned forward. "A river toll for six years. A dead boy's bloody shirt in a drawer. A notebook you couldn't give to a woman who was drowning in my tea."
