Chapter 12: Four Million

My father's voice went on, patient and cold.

"The girl goes to Seattle by the end of the month. Your reversal was not in our agreement, Collier. You were hired to keep my daughter childless and content, and you've done neither."

Brianna made a small sound beside me and put her hand over her mouth.

"Hired," I said.

No one answered.

I pressed the next file, the one before it, and my father spoke again.

"Four million is a handsome salary, Benton. I'm told you have been helping yourself to her trust on top of it. Don't be greedy about the rest."

Cosimo had not moved from the middle of the room.

I played the third, and the fourth, going backward through the years, and my father's voice got younger with every one.

"A child would make her strong. A child gives her something to leave for. You will see to it that she never has one."

I couldn't breathe properly.

I played the next.

"That is a vasectomy, Collier. It isn't a favor. Have it done before the wedding and show her the paperwork, so she believes it was your idea."

I sat down hard on the arm of the sofa.

I had held Benton's face in my hands the night he told me about it.

I had cried because I thought he loved me enough to give something up.

I played another.

"Half now, half on the first anniversary. Four million, and you keep her away from Carraro for the rest of her life."

"Stop," Cosimo said.

"There's more."

"Lydia, stop."

"Not yet."

The oldest was the last of the eleven, dated five years ago, the week before I was meant to run away.

My father's voice was lighter on it, almost fond.

"The note and the photograph go to Carraro tomorrow. He won't be calling again. As far as he knows, she chose you, and as far as she knows he took two million and ran. Keep it that way, and she'll never look back."
