Chapter 7: The Stitches
By ten that night the police were gone and the clinic belonged to Maura again.
Cormac had told the detectives that a stranger had shot the old doctor over a drug dispute.
The detectives had written it down, because Vincent's lawyer had arrived before they did.
Now the line outside was sent home, the front door was bolted, and Vincent lay on the exam table in the back room with his shirt cut off.
The clinic's only doctor, a tired woman in her seventies, checked his pupils and pronounced him a lucky idiot.
"Through and through," she said. "It took a bite out of the muscle on top and missed the bone. I'd stitch it myself, but I have a sister in Quincy who needs her pills."
"I'll do it," Maura said.
The doctor looked at her over her glasses.
"I know you will," she said, and went out.
That left three men and a table.
Two of Vincent's guards stood against the far wall with their hands folded, studying the ceiling.
Cormac leaned in the doorway with a mug of tea.
Maura washed her hands at the sink for a long time.
"I can do this without an audience," she said.
"You can," Cormac agreed. "But Mom always said never leave a Saraceno alone with a needle."
"Mom never met one."
"Mom was smart."
She pulled on gloves and stepped up to the table.
Vincent lay on his right side, watching her with eyes dark from the lamp.
The wound ran from the point of his shoulder in a ragged groove, deep as her finger.
She rinsed it with saline, and he made no sound.
She injected the lidocaine along the edge, and he made no sound at all.
