Chapter 15: Rain
The rain started at ten and came down hard against the kitchen window.
Elliot stood with his coat in his hand.
"I should go," he said.
"Yvette said stay put."
"She meant you."
"She meant both of us, and she knew it." I took the coat out of his hand and hung it on the hook. "You said strictly business, so let's have a business meeting."
"Where?"
"My room."
He looked at me for a long moment.
The muscle in his jaw jumped once.
"Willa."
"I'm not confused," I said. "I'm not scared, and I'm not using you as a shield tonight. I want you. I've wanted you since you lifted Dalton's hand off my wrist."
"I'm your fiancé's brother."
"You're the man who walked into a stairwell and took a punch for me." I stepped in until my chest touched his shirt. "Come to bed."
He made a sound low in his throat.
Then he picked me up, and I laughed against his mouth, and he carried me down the hall.
My room was a bed, a dresser and a lamp with a cracked shade.
He set me on the edge of the mattress and stood between my knees.
His hands were not steady.
"If you want me to stop at any point," he said, "say so, and I'll stop."
"Elliot."
"Say it."
"Stop talking," I said, "and take your shirt off."
He undid the buttons one at a time and let the shirt drop.
He was broad and warm and scarred along one side, an old long pale line under the ribs I wanted to put my mouth on.
I did.
He pulled in a breath through his teeth.
He got my cardigan over my head, then my shirt, and he spent a long time looking at me in the lamplight.
"You're beautiful," he said, roughly.
"I'm eleven weeks pregnant."
"I know." He cupped my breast through the lace, thumb dragging over the nipple until it drew tight and I arched. "I noticed you were beautiful about three weeks before that."
