Chapter 18: The Monitor

"Joey," I said. "Joey, honey, listen to me."

"It's Mommy's!" He was crying so hard he hiccuped. "Grandma says it's Mommy's song and you're stealing it!"

"I'm not stealing anything. I promise."

"You're a fake! You're always a fake!"

There was a scuffle, and a door, and the crying got farther away.

Scott came back on, off speaker now.

"Don't," he said. "Not tonight. Whatever you're going to say."

He hung up.

Cal was standing by the tailgate, looking at me.

"His mom's song," he said.

"No," I said. "It isn't."

Scott came to the studio on Sunday at four.

He came up alone and stood in the doorway in jeans and an old Dalton Builders fleece.

He had a tablet under his arm.

"Joey's with a sitter," he said.

"Why are you here?"

"Because I need you to stop." He didn't sound angry. He sounded worn through. "Whatever you think you're doing, singing that song in front of strangers. He's been up since five asking why."

"Sit down, Scott."

He sat on the piano bench.
