Chapter 11: The Photographer

The text came while Cal was still staring at the gray box on his phone.

It was from a number I didn't know.

"This is the photographer from Saturday. I can't do this anymore. Perkins on Highway 7, four o'clock. Come alone."

"Alone," said Hallie, reading over my shoulder. "I'm going to sit two booths away and eat pie."

"He said alone."

"He said a lot of things on Saturday, and one of them was that he was a wedding photographer."

Cal wanted to come, and I told him no.

"If he sees you, he runs," I said. "You're the face in the video."

He looked at me for a long moment, and then he nodded.

"Call me the second you're done."

"I will."

"I mean it, Lena."

"I know you do."

The Perkins on Highway 7 had a pie case by the register and a hostess who didn't look up.

The photographer sat in the back booth with his camera bag on the seat beside him and both hands around a coffee he wasn't drinking.

He was younger than I'd thought, maybe twenty-six, in a black jacket with a lens cap rolling between his fingers.

Hallie slid into the booth two down from us and picked up a menu without a word.

I sat across from him.

"You're the bride," he said.

"I'm the bride."

"I'm sorry. I should say that first." His voice cracked on it. "I've been awake since the video went up. I didn't know they were going to cut it like that."

"Who is they?"

"Mrs. Courtland." He swallowed. "I mean, I shot it. I sent her the files Saturday night and she said she'd use them. She didn't say how."
