Chapter 15: The Second Card

Hayes's POV

I had been parked outside the burn clinic since midnight, and I had not gone in once.

My wife had a six-thirty appointment to have her dressings changed.

She did not know I was there, and I had decided she should not.

I wanted to be near the door in case she needed a ride and had no one to call.

My phone had forty-one missed calls on it.

Thirty were from reporters, six were from our lawyers, and five were from Camille.

I had not answered Camille, because I did not trust my own voice.

At ten to six someone rapped twice on the passenger window.

It was Fred, in a gray T-shirt, with no jacket and no badge.

He climbed into the seat beside me and shut the door.

"They walked me out through the lobby," he said. "Four security guards for a fifty-eight-year-old man. She wanted the cameras to see."

"I'm sorry, Fred."

"Don't be sorry. Be awake." He took a small zippered pouch from his pocket. "This is the other one."

"The other what?"

"Guardian One carries two recorder cards. One in the cockpit unit, which I gave your wife. One in the satellite phone relay behind the avionics bay."

I looked at the pouch.

"Why would a phone relay record anything?"

"Because the ops desk patches into the cockpit on a live line when they give an order," Fred said. "That's how Camille told me to turn. She never hung up the patch."

"What does that mean?"

"It means for twenty minutes after she gave the order, the card kept recording her side of the room."
