Chapter 17: Peggy's Hands

I didn't hide it from her a second time.

I closed the laptop, carried it across the arch, and knelt beside Peggy's armchair.

"There's something you need to see," I said. "I should have shown you in October."

She looked at my face.

Then she held out her hand for the laptop.

I opened it on her knees.

The whole arch had gone quiet behind us.

Peggy looked at the photograph for a long time.

She took her glasses off, and put them back on, and looked again.

"That's my hands," she said.

"Yes."

"On his book."

"On the cover. And on a poster in the window on Mount Street. Six feet tall."

"Under our name."

"Under your name. On bags glued in New Jersey."

Peggy closed the laptop very gently.

She handed it back to me.

Then she put both hands on the arms of the chair and stood up.

"Gran," Oliver said, coming across the floor. "Sit down. Two weeks, the doctor said."

"The doctor can kiss my backside."

She took off the blanket, folded it into a neat square, and dropped it on the chair.

She walked across the floor to her bench.
