Chapter 18: Thirty-Two Trunks
Zoe chalked the number on the blackboard by the doors every morning.
On Saturday the twenty-first it said 32.
Under it, smaller, she wrote 28 TO GO and drew a skull.
Peggy made her rub the skull off.
Zoe drew a smiley face instead, with fangs.
Ten days to make twenty-eight trunks.
The arch didn't stop.
The stove roared from six in the morning until midnight.
The mallets went from six until the neighbors complained, and then they kept going, and the neighbors stopped complaining and started bringing food.
The café across the lane sent over bacon rolls at seven every day and wouldn't take money.
The woman from the house with the blue door brought a lasagne the size of a suitcase.
The chip shop on the corner sent Oliver home every night with a bag of free chips and a wooden fork, which he now held up at me.
"British fork," he said.
"It's still a splinter."
"You've eaten forty of them."
"Under protest."
By then the lane had changed.
After the Regent Street video, people started coming to look at the arch.
