Chapter 19: Thanksgiving
The only turkey left at the butcher's on Wednesday night was enormous.
The butcher said it would feed twenty.
Peggy's oven could hold, at most, a chicken that had been dieting.
"Cut it in half," Peggy said.
"You can't cut a turkey in half."
"I've cut leather for sixty-three years. Give it here."
So on Thursday morning, Peggy sat at her kitchen table with a cutting knife from the arch and split the turkey down the middle.
One half went in her oven.
The other half went across the lane to the café, whose owner had volunteered his.
At four o'clock the blackboard by the green doors said 44.
16 TO GO.
At five, Oliver locked the doors, and the whole arch walked three houses up the lane in its aprons.
Peggy's house wasn't built for fourteen people.
We pushed her kitchen table into the hall and her front-room table against it, and borrowed two more from the woman with the blue door.
The table ran from the kitchen sink to the front window, under three different tablecloths.
The apprentices sat on the stairs with their plates on their knees.
