Chapter 14: Boyfriend Problem

I played the recording to the end of the first minute and pulled the cable out.

Then I sat in Hank's truck with the drive in my fist and my grandmother's rosary in the other.

I could have driven straight to a television station.

I could have walked it into the Calabasas gym and played it for two hundred families.

Celia would be finished by dinner.

And the first name every reporter said would be Bruce Donovan, the Sutton pilot who obeyed.

I knew that, and I sat there hating that I knew it.

My phone buzzed on the dash.

It buzzed again, and then it would not stop.

I turned it over with my wrist.

The first message was from Hank's mechanic, a single line.

Gianna, come look at the news.

I walked back to the hangar with the drive in my pocket.

The whole crew stood around a laptop on the workbench.

On the screen, a woman at a studio desk wore a grave face and a bright blue suit.

"Sources close to Sutton Aviation tell us the viral rescue pilot known as Raven is in a relationship with the company's chief pilot," she said.

"Photos obtained this morning show the two together at a private airfield."

A photograph filled the screen.

It was Bruce's hand on the small of my back in the middle of the crowd, taken from the roadside with a long lens.

The next one showed the loft window, lit at night, and two shapes behind the glass.

My stomach dropped.

"Sutton Aviation says it never accepted Mr. Donovan's text-message resignation, and has placed him on leave," the anchor went on. "The company says his judgment is under review."

"His judgment," Hank said.

"The same sources suggest Mr. Sutton's estranged wife may have been pursuing the aviation company for personal reasons since long before the fire."

"Since before the fire?" said the medic. "She was married to him."
