Chapter 12: The Terms
"It costs three things," I said.
Tobias waited.
"First, you read before you sign. Everything. A lunch order, a birthday card, a parking ticket."
"Yes."
"Second, you tell me no to my face when you mean no. You don't smile and nod and sort it out later. If you won't do something, you say so, in a room, to me."
He took a breath. "Yes."
"Third." I stopped, because my voice wasn't entirely steady. "You do exactly what I tell you about Dominic. He thinks he's won. Let him."
"You want me to be his best man."
"I want you at the wedding, in a suit, with your mouth shut. You tell me everything he says and everything he asks you to sign, before you sign it. He's selling your name, and I'm going to take the price out of his hands in front of the people who matter to him."
For the first time in three days, something in his face eased.
"That's all?" he said.
"No." I put both hands flat on the desk. "It isn't all. It's the start."
He nodded slowly.
"What do I get?"
"Nothing."
"That's fair."
"You get to stand where I can see you," I said. "That's what you get."
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then his eyes dropped to my side, and his face changed.
"You're bleeding."
I looked down.
A dark patch had come through my blouse over the bandage.
I had forgotten the burn while we read.
"It's fine."
"There's a first-aid kit," Tobias said, already crossing the room. "On the wall. Sit down."
