Chapter 34: Visiting Hours

Trevor had lost weight, and his hair had gone gray over the ears.

He sat down across the bolted steel table in a prison jumpsuit, with a guard against the wall behind him and his hands flat where the guard could see them.

I had not seen him since the roof.

I had expected to feel something large.

I felt, mostly, that the room was cold.

"Claire," he said. "You came."

"You said you'd talk."

"I will." He swallowed. "I want to say something first."

"Then be quick."

"I'm sorry."

I waited.

"I'm sorry for the pills, and the key, and the cloakroom. For all of it." His eyes were wet, and he let them be. "I think about it every night."

"Is that all?"

"No." He leaned forward an inch, and the guard shifted. "I have a parole hearing in seven years. A letter from you would carry weight. You were the victim. If you said you'd forgiven me..."

"No," I said.

"Claire."

"I'm not writing it."

"I've changed."

"You've been in a cage for less than a year. That isn't the same thing."

His mouth shook.

"Mom stopped coming," he said. "She sent a lawyer instead, with a form for me to sign."

"She gave me her shares and ate a store-bought pie at my table," I said. "She is trying to be a better woman than the one who raised you. I'm not going to help you make her feel guilty."

"I'm her son."

"Yes. You wired fifty thousand dollars from your father's memorial fund to a man who put chloral hydrate on a towel."

He looked down at the table.
