I put Lucy in her bouncy seat on the counter and went out in my robe and my rubber boots.
The grass was wet and freezing.
The man in the car saw me coming and rolled his window down.
"Morning, Ms. Lambert," he said.
"You know my name."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Who sent you?"
He looked a little uncomfortable.
"Mr. Fontana."
I turned around and looked at the house.
Leo was standing at the living room window with June on his shoulder and his hair sticking up.
He saw my face and closed his eyes for one second.
I walked back across the lawn and in through the front door.
He was waiting in the hall.
"I can explain," he said.
"Can you."
"After the lobby, I called a firm in Boston. Angela found you once. My mother found you twice." He shifted June higher on his shoulder. "There's a car out there from six to six. He doesn't come near the house. He's just there."
"For how long?"
He hesitated.
"Since the first three came home."
"Since August?"
"Five weeks and two days."
I stared at him.
"There's been a man sitting in my driveway for five weeks, and nobody told me."
