Chapter 29: The Locket

I didn't reach for it.

I held Lucy tighter on my hip and looked at Angela's face.

Her nose was red from the cold.

Her eyes were red from something else.

"I drove up," she said. "I didn't call first. I didn't think you'd pick up."

"I wouldn't have."

"I know." She held the locket out a little further. "This is yours."

The chain swung.

The tiny gold oval turned in the gray light, the way it used to turn on my mother's neck when she bent over the stove.

"You told me you didn't have it," I said. "In April. In front of all those people."

"I lied."

"You told me you didn't know what I was talking about."

"I lied about that too." She swallowed. "I've had it in my jewelry box since February. Under the earrings."

Lucy reached for the shiny chain with both fists.

I turned her away.

"Why now?"

Angela looked down at the snow on her boots.

"Because I opened it," she said. "Last week. I'd never opened it. There's a baby in one side and an old woman in the other."

"Me," I said. "And my grandmother."

"I figured." Her voice shook. "I took the only picture you had of your mother's mother, and I kept it under my earrings for ten months." She pressed her lips together. "I said your babies could be anybody's."
