Sunday dinner at the Astor Street house was set for eight.
By seven-thirty the long dining room had filled with captains.
There were nine men in dark suits.
Their wives had come to look at me, and their sons had been told to stand up straight.
Aurelio sat at my right hand.
Massimo sat at my left.
The chair at the head of the table was empty, and I had decided not to sit in it yet.
I sat in the one beside it.
The housekeeper brought in the soup.
At ten past eight the front bell rang.
Nobody had been invited.
Two of ours showed a man into the dining room.
He stood in the doorway and smiled at the table.
He wore a grey overcoat, and he held a bottle of red wine in one hand.
It was the man from the Drake.
"Miss Pallotta," he said.
"I'm sorry to come unannounced. Mr. Dunleavy sends his regards."
