Chapter 18: The Cellar
Aurelio stopped in the kitchen doorway with his cane in one hand.
He looked at the bread on the floor.
He looked at Massimo's open shirt, and my torn underwear on the tile, and my face.
"The captains," he said gravely, "are staying for coffee and would like to drink to the new head of the family."
"Give us ten minutes," I said.
"I will give you five." He turned and went away.
His shoulders were shaking.
Five minutes later I walked into the dining room with my hair pinned up and my cheeks still hot.
Massimo came behind me in a fresh shirt.
Nine men stood, glasses raised.
"To Salvatore's girl," said the oldest after Aurelio, and they drank.
I drank too.
It was a single glass of red, thick and dark, and I sipped it slowly.
Then I sat at the long table, and the toasts went around.
Massimo sat across from me, three places down.
I looked at him over the rim of my glass.
He was listening to the captain beside him with grave attention.
One hand rested on the stem of his glass, the picture of calm.
I slid off my shoe.
Under the cloth, I stretched my leg until my toes brushed his ankle.
He didn't move.
I slid my foot up his shin, slowly, past his knee, along the inside of his thigh.
A muscle jumped in his jaw.
"Capo," said the man beside him, "you agree?"
"Yes," Massimo said, in a perfectly level voice.
"Absolutely."
My toes reached the hard line in his trousers and pressed.
He set down his glass with great care.
"Excuse me," he said, and stood.
"The Barolo for the table. I'll fetch it from the cellar."
He looked at me once as he left the room.
It was a short look, and it promised me something that made my knees go weak.
