Chapter 21: Daphne's Father
"Put it back in your pocket," I said.
Rory picked up the box.
"I know. It's too soon. I'm not asking."
"I didn't say that either."
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying not in a cemetery parking lot with my mother's letter in my coat."
He let out a laugh.
"Fair."
"And I'm saying when you do it," I said, "you'll know how."
He shoved the box deep into his jacket, started the truck, and said nothing for ten miles.
His ears stayed red the whole way home.
We turned between the limestone gateposts at nine, and the first thing I saw was a black sedan parked across the inn's front walk.
Two men in dark overcoats stood next to it with their hands in their pockets.
A third man was in the lobby, shouting.
I could hear him through the glass before I got the truck door shut.
"You'll do as you're told, Daphne!"
The lobby was full of staff.
The cook was there, and the groundskeeper, and both housekeepers, standing in a loose half circle.
Daphne stood behind the front desk with her hands flat on the wood.
In front of it was a tall man with silver hair, in a very good coat gone shiny at the elbows.
