Chapter 8: The Couch
Yancey turned the lock on the office door and leaned his back against it.
"Mr. Trammell," he said, "sit down."
Jud looked up from his desk.
It was eleven forty on a Thursday, and a call with the harbor master had ended a moment ago.
Light poured through the glass behind him, and the cranes stood out along the channel.
"I have a meeting at noon," Jud said.
"You have a lunch at twelve thirty," Yancey said. "I moved the noon."
"You moved my meeting."
"Yes, sir."
"Without asking," Jud said.
"Term one says nights are yours." Yancey pushed away from the door. "It doesn't say a word about lunch."
Jud sat back slowly in his chair.
A smile started at the corner of his mouth and he put it away.
"That's a loophole."
"You like loopholes. You hire lawyers for them." Yancey crossed the carpet and stopped in front of the desk. "Couch."
"I beg your pardon?"
"The couch. Over there. Sit on it."
For a moment he thought he had gone too far.
Jud's eyes had gone still and dark, and Yancey could feel his own pulse in his throat.
He had spent three weeks being taken apart.
He had liked every minute of it, and he had begun to feel that something in him was going soft.
He needed to know he could still do this.
He needed to see Jud Trammell give him something.
Jud stood.
He walked to the black leather couch by the window and sat at one end with his arm along the back.
"Like this?" he asked.
"Jacket."
Jud took it off.
