Chapter 17: The Cellar Door
Bodie turned his face into my shoulder at the sound of her voice.
He didn't cry out. He just went rigid, every part of him at once.
Nash saw that.
He came down the stone steps slowly, one at a time.
He stopped in the short hall and looked past me.
At the bars bent open.
At my blood on the silver.
At the walls.
He walked to the edge of the bars and leaned in, careful not to touch them, and looked at the scratches in the rock.
He looked at the low ones for a long time.
"Who put him in here?" he said.
"He tried to run again." Delaney came down two steps. "You were gone. I was keeping him safe. And she..."
"Who put him in here?"
"I did," Delaney said. "Because you weren't here to do it."
"I said no more cellar." He didn't turn around. "I told you. I told your father. Nine days ago."
"You said it to a crying pup in a diner. The elder said..."
"Bodie," Nash said.
Bodie didn't lift his head.
"Bodie, buddy. What did Delaney tell you?"
Bodie's voice came out muffled against my sweater.
