Chapter 19: Two Million Dollars
The invitation came on thick cream paper, hand-delivered to the garage at nine in the morning.
*The Board of Mercy General requests the presence of Mrs. Joan Bracken, her son and Ms. Kira Tennant, to discuss a resolution.*
"A resolution," Joan said from her wheelchair. "Is that what they call it?"
"It's a trap," said Cal.
"Of course it's a trap. We're going."
Mercy General's boardroom had a table made from a single slab of walnut and a window over the whole city.
A dozen people in dark suits sat along the long sides.
At the head of the table sat a silver-haired woman, the board chair, with a folder open in front of her.
Gerald Ridgway sat at her right hand in his navy coat, with his lawyer behind him.
The charge nurse from the lobby stood against the wall in a pressed uniform, her hands folded.
She did not look at Joan.
Cal pushed his mother's chair to the foot of the table, and Kira took the seat beside it, her cane hooked on the arm.
"Thank you for coming," the chair said. "Mrs. Bracken, on behalf of Mercy General, I want to say how deeply sorry we are for what occurred in our lobby."
"Do you?" Joan said.
"The hospital's conduct was a regrettable lapse."
"A lapse," said Joan. "They threw me out barefoot in a gown, and you call it a lapse."
A board member at the far end looked down at the table.
Gerald opened a leather folder and set it on the walnut.
"The family would like to put this matter to rest," he said. "In recognition of what Mr. Bracken has suffered, the Ridgway Foundation and Mercy General will jointly offer two million dollars to each of you."
