Chapter 23: Kneeling
We went down into the courtyard with the mark still raw on my throat.
Ronan walked beside me in his plain black coat.
He had put on no crown, and he held Elias in the crook of his arm.
I had my hand through his other elbow.
The yard was full.
Every Alpha who had been at Moon Court had come back, and some who had never come before.
There were twenty-six of them, in long lines across the snow, with their betas at their backs and their banners hanging wet.
The red-bearded Alpha from the eastern hills stood at the front.
When we reached the bottom of the steps, he went down on one knee.
He did it slowly, as a big man does, and the whole yard went with him.
Twenty-six Alphas and their wolves lowered themselves to the frozen stones.
I had knelt on stone like that, once.
I looked at their bent heads, and my hand tightened on Ronan's sleeve.
"Make them stand," I said, very low.
"They'll stand when they've said it."
The red-bearded Alpha lifted his head.
"Ronan Greaves. Wynne Ashcroft. We came to say we were wrong."
"Wrong about what?" said Ronan.
"About the law of the line. About the price." His voice was rough. "We've held that custom for two hundred years. It put a pregnant woman on her knees on the rock."
"We did nothing."
"We all stood on that bank and did nothing, and called it the old way."
A woman Alpha from the northern hills spoke next, her face pale and set.
"I have a daughter. I'd have burned the border down if anyone had done it to her."
