Chapter 12: The Priest's Son

We went in at first light.

Min-jun was awake. He didn't remember the night.

He looked at the bite on my arm and then at his own mouth and went very still.

"I did that," he said.

"Yes."

"I don't remember."

"I know."

He didn't say sorry. I think he understood it wouldn't have meant anything.

The temple door was bronze and it was already open.

Not broken. Open. Like somebody had left it that way.

We went through.

Inside was one long room, then a second, then a third, all of them lit by a light that didn't come from anywhere.

The walls were covered in the circles I'd seen on the shrine lintel.

Rows and rows of them, one inside the other, going up to the ceiling.

My mother stopped in the middle of the second room and put her hand on the wall.

"I've seen this," she said.

"Where?"

"Before you were born. My mother brought me here once."

She said it very quietly.

Then she said, "She was the high priest's daughter."

I turned around.

"What?"

"My mother." She was still looking at the wall. "The high priest's daughter. She married a merchant and left the forest, and that's how she survived. Luca's men didn't know about her. She was already married out."
