Chapter 19: Motel

Nicholas didn't move from the floor.

His hand was still over mine on his shoulder.

"Did you?" he said.

The mechanic opened his eyes.

"I told her to get back in the truck. She didn't listen. She held the flashlight for me. She asked what the line was for, and I told her. She asked what happens if it's cut, and I told her that too."

He looked at his hands.

"When I was done, she said thank you. Like I'd fixed her bicycle."

I reached over and stopped the recording.

My finger left a damp mark on the screen.

"You have to come with us," I said. "Tonight. There's a plane in Midland. We can have you in Montana by morning."

He shook his head.

"Not tonight."

"They know you ran."

"My boy's birthday is tomorrow. He's twenty-two. I've called him every year for fourteen years at nine in the morning, and every year he hangs up. I'm not calling him from a plane."

"You can call him from anywhere."

"I'll call him from here. Then I'll come."

Nicholas got up off the floor.

He took a card out of his wallet and wrote on the back.

"This is my cell. This is the motel. Room eleven. If anybody comes to that door before morning, you call me and you go out the back."

The mechanic took the card and put it in his own wallet, behind his license.
