Chapter 23: Two Packs
"There'll be no ruling from either bank," I said.
My voice shook, and I let it.
"Ashfen keeps its keep. Ironmere keeps its hold."
"On this line, where we're standing, we build one table, and nobody sits at the head of it."
"Torren and I will answer for both banks. The Mother Elder sits for Ashfen's old, and Cadoc and Gethin sit for the young."
"Any wolf with a wound that never closed walks in, whichever bank they were born on."
Nobody spoke.
Then the man with the silver scar pushed forward through the Ironmere line.
"Will she fix the other arm?" he said, loudly. "That's my price."
"I'll fix the other arm," I said.
"Then I'll sit anywhere you like."
The grey-bearded wolf laughed first.
The sound ran down both lines, shaky and enormous, and I knew the thing was done.
Dawn came pale and cold over the burned hill.
Four hundred wolves stood on the black grass, in a ring around the eleven stones.
My father came up the slope in irons, between two Ashfen wolves who would not look at him.
