Chapter 15: Her Own Plan
Alma Quill was at Roberta's door in nineteen minutes, with her tote and her anchor brooch.
Roberta opened it in her socks and said, "You're the aunt."
"I am no one's aunt," said Alma. "Where is the table?"
I had spent the intervening nineteen minutes writing on the back of Landon's term sheet, because it was the only paper in the apartment that deserved to be used that way.
Three pages, in pencil, in my worst handwriting.
Alma put on a pair of half-moon glasses and read them standing up.
She did not sit, did not speak, and did not touch the tea Roberta offered.
She uncapped a red pen.
"Page one," she said. "You have Halyard buying the Lakeshore note at par and lending it back at four percent for ten years."
"Yes."
"The Zeeland land stays titled to Haverkamp, pledged to no one."
"Yes."
"The downtown showroom sold and leased back, to put a million and a half toward the principal."
"The showroom is dead weight," I said. "Nobody has bought a sofa in a store since 2019."
