Lyle did not shout.
He stood in the door of his own office, turning the token in his fingers.
"I wondered how long it would take you," he said.
"You wanted me here."
"I wanted you somewhere I could see you."
He stepped inside and shut the door behind him.
"You walked into a house full of my staff in a rented jacket. Forgive me if I'm flattered."
"How did you know?"
"At seven I watched a waiter carry his tray like a man who had never held one."
He tilted his head.
"And Brant brought the nurse. That was clumsy. Brant is not clumsy by choice, so someone is advising him."
My ear clicked once, hard.
Ellen's warning.
"What do you want?" I said.
"Right now?" Lyle smiled. "I want a witness."
He pulled his phone from his breast pocket and pressed it once.
Down the hall, feet pounded.
