Chapter 22: Six Weeks
Esme was six weeks old and asleep, and for the first time in forty-two days nobody had to hold her.
She lay in the bassinet at the foot of the bed with her fists beside her ears.
She snored in a very small way, under a blanket Carly had knitted and Roman had been afraid to wash.
Jamie stood in the doorway of the primary suite and watched her.
He wore a thin grey T-shirt and nothing else.
His body had come back to him in pieces, a softness at the belly that had not gone and a fresh lean ache in the legs.
A new faint line of silver at his hip.
He did not mind any of it.
Roman lay against the headboard with the lamp low, reading a script he had not turned a page of in a quarter of an hour.
He lowered it as Jamie crossed the floor.
"The doctor said six weeks," Jamie said.
"The doctor said six weeks if you feel ready."
"I'm asking."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm asking you to ask me," Jamie said, "like you promised, and then I'll say yes."
Roman put the script down on the sheet.
His eyes went over him slowly, and what was in them made the muscles of Jamie's stomach go tight.
"Do you want this?"
"Yes."
"Tonight? Here?"
"Yes."
"Then come to bed."
He came.
They did not rush it.
Roman drew him down onto his side, facing, with a hand curved over his hip and a leg hooked gently between his.
They lay for a minute nose to nose, breathing the same air.
It was easier than Jamie had expected.
It was also, after six weeks of burp cloths and three a.m. diapers, like meeting for the first time.
