At one in the morning Jamie wanted three things, and he could only name two of them.
He wanted a dill pickle, and he wanted to throw up, and he wanted something that had nothing to do with either.
He stood in the middle of the guest wing in his boxers and a T-shirt, six weeks pregnant, and could not breathe through his own skin.
The ledger lay open on the desk.
*Night 3 of no sleep. Soup: pennies. Hand on neck: ?? Do not go upstairs.*
He went upstairs.
He told himself it was for the pickles.
The kitchen was dark, and the jar was in the fridge, and he ate two spears standing in the cold light with his eyes closed.
It did nothing for the other thing.
He wandered into the great glass living room, where the lights of the Pacific lay scattered across the black.
Roman was asleep on the couch.
He lay on his back in a henley and sweatpants, one arm hanging off the cushion and the cookbook open on his chest.
His mouth was a little open.
The scar looked softer in the moonlight, and the line between his eyebrows had finally gone away.
The scent coming off him hit Jamie.
His knees went, and he had to put a hand on the back of the couch.
*I'm only going to look,* he thought.
He leaned over to take the book off Roman's chest, and a huge hand shot up and closed around his wrist.
