Chapter 18: Night Before
I called Mike before I'd finished reading the third text.
He picked up on the first ring.
"She called me," he said. "Twenty minutes ago."
"What did she say?"
"She said Callen's quitting the team if he embarrasses her. She asked me to have his locker cleaned out by Monday." He spit a shell. I could hear it. "Kids don't have lockers, Renee. It's a youth league. There's a bucket."
"Mike."
"I told her the roster's mine. Section two. Head coach sets the roster, and only the board can take a kid off it." A pause. "She said she'll pull him herself. She can. She's his mother."
I closed my eyes.
"So we don't fix it," he said. "We tell him the truth. Whatever he says on that stage, his spot behind the plate's here when he's ready. Even if it's next year."
I texted the shortstop's phone.
"Say your own thing. Coach says your spot is yours. It'll be there whenever you come back. So will I."
It took a long time.
"ok"
Then: "ok ren."
The duplex was on a little street two blocks from the ballpark.
From the back step you could see the top of the scoreboard over the trees.
