"Look at me, baby boy," Malcolm said.
Perrin kept his eyes on the floor, grinning, and pushed the broom in a slow line across the tiles.
"I'm busy," he said.
"You're sweeping the same square of floor."
"It's a very dirty square."
It was ten minutes past closing on the last Tuesday of October.
The Gull & Kettle was warm and empty, and the chairs were stacked on the tables.
The corner table by the back window had a new brass lamp.
Malcolm had bought it himself.
He had asked first.
Perrin had said yes, and then an hour later no, and then yes again.
Agnes had written it in the ledger as the only lamp in Maine with a legal history.
A year had gone by since the night of the latte.
Perrin counted it out sometimes, on slow afternoons, behind the counter.
The morning after Malcolm's birthday, Malcolm had asked him what he wanted to be called, and Perrin had said husband.
