Chapter 17: The Release
Arthur handed me his list on a brown paper bag, and it was the best document I read all weekend.
He had written it in pencil, in four lines, with the grease of somebody's lunch still on the fold.
The fourth line said: A woman who knows exactly what I did, and stays in the room.
"You said it couldn't be you," he said.
"It isn't me," I said. "It's a room. I can do a room."
I put the bag in my pocket with the Release and the two price cards, and my coat was getting heavy.
At six that evening, Peter postponed the Closing Supper, which no Endicott had done in ninety years.
We gathered in the library around the glass case.
Winifred stood at the head of the table, with Esther at her elbow and the green notebook open.
Peter held a clipboard and a small bottle of ink.
Holly sat on a window seat with her feet up.
The staff crowded in the doorway, and the cook had brought a dish towel to wring.
"The Release is signed by the heir and witnessed by a trustee," Peter said.
"The one he intends to marry has read it. Then it's final."
