Chapter 15: Tea at the Hollis
The Hollis Country Club served tea on Wednesdays in a sunroom full of ferns.
Dolores Landry had the table by the window, with her pearls on and a pot of Earl Grey already poured for two.
I sat down without being asked.
My phone was in my jacket pocket, and the red dot was running.
"Leah," she said. "You look well. Marriage suits you."
"You sent a car for me, Dolores. The driver said it was urgent."
"It is urgent. For you."
She lifted her cup with her little finger out.
"Let me be direct, since you have always preferred direct. This has gone on long enough."
"Which part?"
"All of it. The courthouse. The scene at my showroom. The little recording you played for my customers."
She set down the cup.
"I am a practical woman. I paid thirty-eight thousand dollars for a wedding you walked out of, and my son has since paid, you tell me, forty-one thousand toward something else."
"Toward his wedding. At the church I left."
"Toward the settlement of an unfortunate misunderstanding." She slid a long envelope across the white cloth. "Open it."
Inside was a certified check.
It was made out to Leah Goodall, for forty-one thousand dollars.
The date in the corner was November twenty-second.
"The day after the wedding," I said.
"A courtesy. We'd want everything quiet through the weekend."
"And for that."
"You'll sign two things." She took a thin folder from her purse. "An annulment petition, which your husband's lawyers can review at their leisure. And a short agreement that you will not discuss the Landry family, the church, or the money, with anyone."
