Chapter 16: Sunday Dinner
Norma's look followed me for six days, and then Maxwell's mother put a bowl of potatoes in my hands.
"Take that to the long table," she said. "And don't let my son tell you where to set it."
"I wasn't going to," Maxwell said, from behind me.
"You were going to point."
"I was going to point helpfully."
I carried the potatoes across the barn floor, grinning.
The Hensley family dinner happened every Sunday in the old dairy barn behind the farmhouse.
Someone had swept the concrete and strung lights across the rafters.
A table made of three doors laid end to end ran down the middle.
It was loud in a way I had forgotten a room could be.
Maxwell's mother had gray braids and forearms like a blacksmith.
His father said almost nothing, and fed the barn cats under the table with a fork.
His sister had the same green eyes and none of his patience.
She took one look at me and said, "So you're the girl who called a goat as a witness."
