Chapter 19: The Night Before
The bathtub in the master suite was carved from a single block of grey stone.
Chak had run it hot enough to steam the windows.
"Get in," he said.
"You first."
"You first, nerd. I want to watch."
Phat stripped under his eye in the lamplight, and climbed over the rim, and the heat closed round him up to the chest.
He sighed.
It was the first time in eight days that his shoulders had come down.
Chak lowered himself in behind him, and the water rose.
Phat was drawn back against a warm broad chest with a big arm across his stomach.
"Tomorrow..." Phat began.
"Not tonight."
"I wasn't going to talk about the board," Phat said.
"You were about to count something."
"I was going to count your heartbeats."
"Count them, then," Chak said into his hair.
Phat laid his head back on his shoulder and counted.
It was fast.
Chak's hands moved through the water, over his ribs, down his hips, slow and soapy and thorough.
They washed each other's hair.
Chak's fingers worked the shampoo into Phat's scalp with a care that was almost comic in a man that size.
