Chapter 36: Posy's Messages
Micah sat down across from her very slowly.
I stayed on my feet by the counter, with one hand on the coffee pot.
"Pose," he said.
"Don't say anything yet," Posy said. "Please. I wrote it down, so I can say it in order."
Her voice was hoarse and flat and careful.
It was the voice she used for presentations at school.
"It started in October," she said. "I was on the company account, doing the comments."
"There was a direct message from somebody with no picture."
"It said, I think I'm your mom."
Micah didn't move.
"I thought it was a prank. I almost blocked it."
"But then she said my birthday, and the hospital."
"And she said I have a birthmark on the back of my left knee, shaped like a lima bean."
"I do," Posy said. "Dad, you always told me it was a lima bean."
"It is a lima bean," Micah said, and his voice cracked in the middle.
"She said her name used to be Jackie. She said she'd made a terrible mistake and thought about me every day."
