Chapter 18: Joan Walks In
Joan came down the path from the pack house on her own two feet.
She wore her blue housecoat and her reading glasses on their chain.
She was holding the arm of the Redfall wolf with the bandaged throat.
The wolf from the mill.
He looked at no one.
The east side parted to let her through, wolf by wolf.
"Aunt Joan," Darian said.
His voice cracked on the second word.
"Hello, darling. Don't fuss." She patted the wolf's arm. "This young man came up to the house an hour ago and asked if he might carry me. I said I would rather walk, and he said he would walk beside me. It was very decent of him."
Her face was grey and still swollen.
Her chin was up.
"You're out of bed," I said weakly.
"Sweetheart, I have been poisoned for ten days. I intend to see it end."
Someone near me started to cry.
Joan stopped in the middle of the ring.
She looked at Dunstan for a long moment, and then, without hurry, she looked around the whole meadow.
"I am Joan Carraway," she said. "I have kept the pack house for thirty years, and I will tell you what I know."
"Joan." Dunstan had not stopped smiling. "My dear, you are ill. You're confused. Sit down."
"I am not confused. You poured my tea yourself at your lodge, on Tuesday, with a silver pot, and you said it would settle my stomach. My stomach was not unsettled. My eyes had been swollen since Delaney's first night at my table, and I knew the smell on her wrist. I told Calla to look for it."
