Chapter 12: Verbier in March
I plugged the stick into my laptop right there on the steel table.
Kevin stood dripping by the door.
The folder had six hundred messages and forty-one voice notes.
I found last Christmas.
December twenty-fourth. Four eighteen in the afternoon.
I pressed play.
The first thing I heard was my own stand mixer.
I knew that sound. I'd bought that mixer with my first Harrow paycheck and hauled it to her house because hers was broken.
Then Susan's voice, low and warm and delighted.
"She's in there making the red bean buns now. Four hours, I told her. Four hours, and she said, 'Of course, Mom.'"
She laughed.
"Honestly, Alzheimer's is the best thing that ever happened to me. I should have gotten it years ago. Dexter, go. Take Phoebe skating. Don't rush."
The note ended.
The commissary was very quiet.
Even the radio seemed to have turned itself down.
