Chapter 9: Phoebe's Here
I walked into the crowd.
People stepped back to let me through.
Dexter was on his knees beside his mother, trying to lift her.
She shoved his hands away.
"Not you. Addie. I want Addie."
I knelt down on the wet pavement in front of her.
Her glasses had fallen off their chain. I picked them up and held them.
"I'm here, Mom."
"Oh, Addie." She grabbed my wrist. "Oh, thank God. Everyone's a stranger. I don't know anybody."
"I know," I said. "It's scary."
"So scary."
"Nobody here you know at all?"
"Nobody but you, honey. Only you."
The crowd was quiet now. Listening.
I leaned in a little.
I looked over her shoulder, toward the end of the aisle, and I let my face light up.
"Oh, look," I said. "Mom. Phoebe's here."
Susan's head snapped around so fast her hair swung.
She scanned the crowd, sharp and quick.
Her hand went up and smoothed her hair.
