Chapter 31: His Ring
The detectives came down the middle aisle between the round tables.
They stopped at the foot of the stage, below the head table.
The oldest of the three, a gray-haired woman in a raincoat, looked up at Ottavio.
Then she turned to the mechanic.
"Is he here?"
The mechanic lifted his cuffed hands and pointed.
"That's him. Mr. Abate."
The speakers were still live, and his hoarse voice came out of the ceiling.
"Thirty thousand dollars in a cigar box. For Benedetto's brakes. And ten more for the old man's Buick."
Ottavio didn't move.
His smile stayed where it was, but his face had gone gray.
"I've never seen this man in my life," he said.
"He serviced your Cadillac for nine years, Ottavio," the Southie captain said from the floor. "I've seen him in your driveway."
The detective climbed the three steps onto the stage.
"Ottavio Abate, you're under arrest for the murder of Benedetto Ruggiero," she said. "And the attempted murder of Nino Ferrante."
The detective took Ottavio's wrist.
He held out the other hand himself.
