Chapter 9: Forty-Nine Percent
Sutton didn't take her hands.
He set his drumstick down on a paper plate and wiped his fingers on a napkin first.
Then he stood up.
"No," he said.
Twyla kept smiling.
"You haven't heard the number."
"I don't need to hear the number."
"Two cars, Sutton. Uncle and nephew. Tillery and Tillery. The sponsors would line up around the block." She glanced at the gray #4 in the barn. "Instead of this."

"Did he tell you, sugar?"
I didn't answer.
"Did he tell you he owns forty-nine percent of the team that fired you?"
The barn went quiet.
Even the hound lifted his head.
I looked at Sutton.
He didn't look away.
That was the worst part.
He didn't look away, and he didn't look surprised, and he didn't say a word.
"I'll take that as no," Twyla said. "His brother left it to him. Forty-nine percent of Tillery Racing. He can't vote it and he can't sell it to anybody but me, but it's his." She pulled on her gloves one finger at a time. "Every dollar that paid your salary, honey. Every dollar of that severance check you tore up. Some of it was his."
